East Central Area Literacy Council Establishing County Committees

The East Central Area Literacy Council is establishing county committees comprised of volunteers to support adult education programs.

Each committee will be comprised of local volunteers, an Adult Education and Literacy (AEL) instructor from an adult education class site, and alumni students from the adult education program in each county.

The East Central Area Literacy Council includes Franklin, Phelps, Crawford, Gasconade and Montgomery counties.

According to Alice Whalen, volunteer director of the literacy council, the county committees will support the adult education class sites, students, teachers and volunteers in each county through advocacy for adult education, student and volunteer recruitment, and periodic fundraising for classroom items.

Classroom items include textbooks, technology, scholarships for the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test) and other teacher and classroom resources.

County committees will elect officers in May and appoint 2 members to serve on the East Central Area Literacy Council Board of Directors beginning in July 2021.

Anyone interested in working with the committee can complete a volunteer registration form at ecaliteracy.org or email volunteer@ecaliteracy.org for more information.
